Plant-based Campus
Plant-Based Campus is a student-led organisation campaigning for our educational institutions to transition to 100% plant-based catering as a fast, effective, and evidence-based climate solution.
The climate crisis is accelerating. Institutions with knowledge, resources, and public influence have a responsibility to act. Education institutions are uniquely positioned to lead. Yet, one of the most impactful areas of university emissions remains largely untouched: food.
we are running out of time institutions need to act
Higher education institutions are uniquely positioned to drive food system change at scale.
Education institutions are not just places of learning, they are large public institutions, major food purchasers, and influential cultural leaders. Every day, they make thousands of food-related decisions through their catering contracts, procurement policies, and campus operations. Those decisions translate directly into emissions, land use, and environmental impact.
At the same time, education institutions publicly commit to climate leadership. Many have declared climate emergencies, set net-zero targets, and produce world-leading research on sustainability and climate science. Yet, despite being a major source of emissions, food often remains absent from institutional climate strategies. It’s time for them to practice what they teach.
Educational institutions also shape norms. What is served on campus influences how tens of thousands of students understand food, sustainability, and institutional responsibility. When plant-based food becomes the default in higher education, it signals that sustainable choices are normal, credible, and achievable at scale.
Because educational institutions educate future leaders, operate at significant scale, and hold public trust, they have both the capacity and the responsibility to lead on climate action. Transforming campus catering is a concrete, high-impact way to do exactly that.

LISTEN TO THE SCIENCE! 🌱
The research speaks for itself: we need rapid food system transformation in order to meet the climate goals. And one of the most effective ways to do so is through plant-based food systems.
OUR APPROACH
Plant-Based Campus works with student campaigners to:
Build research-backed cases for plant-based catering
Engage constructively with university staff, caterers, and decision-makers
Form coalitions across climate, health, and social justice movements
Policy commitments that shift plant-based food from an option to the default
Our focus is institutional change - not individual choice. When institutions change what they serve, sustainable food becomes normal, accessible, and inclusive by default.
