On 21 March, students at Malmö University officially launched the Plant-Based Campus Malmö campaign. The initiative calls on the university administration, its catering providers, and affiliated organisations to transition to a 100% plant-based food system to address the climate and environmental crises.

The launch comes at a critical time as the Malmö Student Union recently passed a motion that the union’s catering shall be vegetarian by default and always provide 100% plant-based options.

Gaia Freund, Coordinator of the Plant-Based Campus Malmö campaign, said:

“We have officially launched Plant-Based Campus Malmö and are so excited to join the movement to fight for plant-based catering. We look forward to making a positive impact on food systems alongside our friends at the Lund and Copenhagen campaigns”

Plant-Based Campus Malmö aims to promote 100% plant-based catering as an essential part of addressing the climate and environmental crisis. The campaign strengthens other local initiatives, such as those by Malmö City, which says they “would like to have closer cooperation with schools and [...] work harder to ensure acceptance of more plant-based meals.”

The Plant-Based Campus Malmö campaign is now planning next steps, including discussions with key stakeholders, campus outreach and social events. Students at Malmö University who want to get involved can contact the campaign through Instagram or via the Plant-Based Campus contact page

Plant-Based Campus is a democratic student-led campaign working with universities and higher education institutions to transition to 100% plant-based catering to reduce emissions. Plant-Based Campus is currently active at 15 universities across the Nordics.
