Plant-Based Campus Campaigner Wins Sustainability Award
"Through his work, Manuel has consistently built bridges between students, staff, and external partners. As co-coordinator of the Plant-Based Campus Movement, he has driven initiatives towards a more sustainable campus, while also fostering dialogue and collaboration."
Linköping University (LiU) doctoral candidate and Plant-Based Campus LiU co-coordinator, Manuel Santana, has been awarded the “Engaged Student of the Year 2026” Award during this year’s Engagemangshögtiden, recognising his contributions to sustainability, student engagement, and community-building across LiU.
The event celebrates students who contribute to strengthening university life through leadership, collaboration, and initiatives that create positive impact within the academic community. This year, four students received the award for their efforts in shaping a more engaged and connected university environment.
Manuel was recognised for his work with Plant-Based Campus LiU, his networking efforts through NAVITAS Studentförening, and his involvement in the LiU Sustainability Transformations group. The jury highlighted his ability to connect students, staff, and external actors around shared sustainability goals,“Through his work, Manuel has consistently built bridges between students, staff and external partners. As co-coordinator of the Plant-Based Campus Movement, he has driven initiatives towards a more sustainable campus, while also fostering dialogue and collaboration.”
Through Plant-Based Campus LiU, Manuel and his team are advocating for LiU to lead the plant-based dietary transition. Together with fellow students and collaborators, the chapter has (co-)organised events such as the Linköping Vego plant-based fair, and community activities to bring students together around shared values.
Reflecting on the recognition, Manuel emphasised the collective nature of the work,
“This recognition belongs to all my colleagues at the campaign. Their commitment towards a more sustainable and fairer university speaks volumes, and I am proud to share these ideals with them.”
He also highlighted the importance of the wider sustainability community at Linköping University, including the role of NAVITAS and colleagues at TekNaD and IBL in supporting the work.
Plant-Based Campus is a democratic student-led campaign working with universities and higher education institutions to transition to 100% plant-based catering in response to the climate and environmental crises. Join us to drive the plant-based transition!
